What Are Recycled Fabrics: Use Mineral Water Bottles to Make Backpacks

As global warming problem worsens, an increasing number of people have started to pay attention to environmental issues. In the pursuit of environmental sustainability, Chaumetbags promotes the use of eco-friendly materials, giving new life to discarded materials and developing backpacks made from recycled fabrics. We use recycled PET plastic, nylon fibers to help protect the earth.

Recycled Polyester Fabric: The Reborn of Water Bottles

Plastic products can be seen everywhere in our everyday life, although it provides a lot of convenience for us, but it also causes serious pollution to the environment. Reducing the use of plastic products and reusing plastic waste is an issue that we humans must face in order to survive.

What is REPT Fabric?

RPET fabric is a type of recycled environmentally friendly fabric, its full name recycled polyester fabric. Its raw material is extracted from recycled mineral water bottles and Coke bottles after inspection. The RPET yarn is made through separating-slicing-spinning, cooling and collecting the silk, commonly known as Coke bottle environmental protection cloth.

The fabric can be recycled and reused, which can save energy, oil consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Every pound of recycled RPET fabric can save 61,000 BTU of energy, which is equivalent to 21 pounds of carbon dioxide.

After dyeing, coating, and calendering, the fabric can also pass the testing of MTL, SGS, ITS and other international standards, including phthalates (6P), formaldehyde, lead (Pb), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, Nonylfen and other environmental protection indicators have reached the latest European environmental standards and the latest American environmental standards.

What are recycled fabrics

Polyester is a common material used in backpacks. The production of common  polyester is often derived from petroleum. In the production of recycled polyester fibers, not only are the plastic bottles reused, but this also means that less petroleum feedstock is used to produce polyester, as well as fewer pollutants are emitted during the production process.

The recycled polyester fibers we use are produced through a mechanical process rather than chemical synthesis, so no harmful chemicals are re-generated during the production process, which is also a great protection for the environment.

The GRS-certified recycled polyester we use has almost the same properties compared to common polyester but with significant environmental benefits. It's durable, lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, colorfast, quick-drying, stain-resistant, eco-friendly, and economical. →Chaumetbag: Recycled Polyester Makeup Bag.

Recycled Nylon Fabric: Beyond The Traditional

Nylon is a plastic that is very commonly used in backpacks (It makes the bag lighter, with better waterproofing and resistance to discoloration.). But for all its advantages, it is still derived from petroleum products, and therefore not environmentally friendly at all.

However, nylon is not as easily recycled as the previously mentioned polyester. Normally, during the recycling process, the materials used for recycling will be melted, and the melting process not only melts the material into a reproducible state, but also destroys the contaminants in the material.

But  nylon melts at a much lower temperature than most materials, and when nylon is melted, it may contain contaminants that have not yet been destroyed by the heat. For this reason, nylon must be thoroughly cleaned before it begins recycling. But a reliable source of clean nylon is hard to find, so we're working closely with our partners to ensure that the recycled nylon we use is purified.

We use bluesign® certified recycled nylon obtained mostly from fishing nets, nylon carpets and clothing. The cost of purified nylon is relatively high, but it is of great benefit to the environment. →Chaumetbag: Recycled Nylon Sports Bag

Each season we saved more than 5 million pounds of CO2 emissions by using recycled fabrics compared to common fabrics. By the Spring 2024, 60% of the polyester and nylon fabric we use has been recycled. Together, we can put purpose above profit and protect this wonderful planet, our only home.

Chaumet has launched a series of backpacks made of RPET fabrics and recycled nylon. Chaumet bags with the actual product interpretation of the "Low-carbon & Energy-saving" concept, we also call on our friends to take action in protecting the environment.
